TANK TOPPED
The vest, or tank top, used to be viewed as underclothes, but it makes frequently appearances in this season of Hong Kong Fashion Week. Looking back on fashion history, many components of underclothes have gradually evolved, and even become fashion staple. In the mid-18th century, a shirt was no more than an undergarment. As men's statuesque physique was subject of worship, translucent shirts were particularly alluring. On holiday in Continental Europe, men would wear white shirts and commission portraits of themselves. The shirt's influence grew widely and it transformed itself from a functional undergarment into a trend.
Fast forward to 2022, and Bottega Veneta and Prada have both placed much emphasis on the vest for Autumn/Winter 2022. Time has shown that sex appeal is an infinite source of inspiration for menswear. Kowloon City Boy and REDEMPTIVE have been chosen this time for their distinct approach towards the vest. The subject of Kowloon City Boy is boys' youth, and it has redefined the colour pink and the knitting on a vest. REDEMPTIVE, meanwhile, adopts a design methodology of deconstruction, and the vest is one part of the whole design structure of. It is somewhat "frigid", and the fabric have a rhythm by consisting of a heavy part and a light part.
They are both vests, but in starkly different styles. So different, yet the same, a welcome sight that Hong Kong fashion brands are indeed blooming.
