Art Deco’s bold graphical style inspired the creation of BERTH, a boutique by designer Afa Tsang

A new designer boutique in Tsimshatsui’s Mira Place will set any vintage style lovers’ hearts aflutter with its unmistakable 1920s décor, collections and accessories.

BERTH is the brainchild of Afa Tsang, a Hong Kong designer who has a penchant for the strong visual styles of Art Deco. A finalist at the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest in 2008 while she was still a student, Afa has since gained experience designing menswear and womenswear, most notably for singer Alex To’s label, MNA Rockability Chic, where she was chief designer in menswear before being asked to develop the women’s line.

In 2014, Afa felt it was time to realise the dream of setting up her own label. “I could have just launched the label without having a shop, but it would have been difficult to control costs that way since my production orders would be extremely small. So I took the plunge and opened an ‘upstairs’ shop inside a building in Causeway Bay that doubled as my workshop.”

Starting out as a one-woman team offering just over a dozen styles per season, BERTH gradually expanded as Afa gathered a loyal following for her vintage inspired designs.

“While studying fashion history in college, I was drawn to the 20s because there was this total paradigm change. The waistline got lower or was non-existent, and short bobs and a flat chest were in fashion; it was a time when feminism was gaining ground. Add the geometric lines of Art Deco to the mix and I was totally in love with this era,” she explained.

The recent opening of the shop at Mira Place represents a milestone for BERTH. It is bigger than the original shop and enables Afa’s retro 1920s stylings to truly shine. In addition to Afa’s own clothing collections, the shop carries a vintage jewellery collection and hats.

This September will see another milestone realised for BERTH, as it has been invited by Oxford Fashion Showroom to participate in a group runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

“They found us on the Fashionally website and apparently chose us from a pool of 8,000 brands from around the world. Since we have always focused on local retail, BERTH has never participated in any runway show or trade events before. The show will be the first time for BERTH to reach an audience beyond the Hong Kong market,” said Afa.

Also in the pipeline for BERTH is a menswear linea, which is great news for male art deco lovers!
