Flowers are one of the ultimate symbols of beauty. From seed to flower, the waiting time can be long, but it is always worth the wait. The ARTO. Fall/Winter 2019 collection “THAT MOMENT” sets out to chronicle this amazing process of growing beauty.
“This process is filled with possibilities. What will the flower look like? It tickles my imagination,” said Arto Wong, founder of women’s knitwear label ARTO..
As with her debut season last year, Wong explores different knitting techniques and graphics to create flower shapes. “In this world, each flower is unique, so every one I make is different. There are different sizes, and different ruffles for the petals,” she said.
Using premium Japanese polyester mixed with wool, the silhouette is voluminous but the clothes are still lightweight. It is an expensive material but one that is practical, as it does not shrink and is very durable.
ARTO.’s FASHIONALLY Presentation is set in a gallery, with paintings by the designer hanging on the wall. The clothes and paintings complement one another, creating a strong visual effect like installation art. A palette of purple, teal, green and baby blue permeates the presentation with strong colour contrasts.
Wong graduated with a BA in Fashion and Textiles Design and Knitwear Design with Technology as her major from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The designer was crowned champion and secured the New Talent Award at the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest (YDC) in 2017, and launched her namesake label in the following year. Wong’s designs break out of traditional knitwear styles and shapes, pushing the boundaries of knitwear by experimenting with different techniques and material combinations.
The New Talent Award gave Wong the opportunity to retail her debut collection at JOYCE, Hong Kong’s mecca of high fashion. Wong is extremely appreciative of this collaboration, which provided her with invaluable insights into customers as she continues to develop her young brand.
