#FAfeature | “I’ve always believed in supporting young designers” - An Interview with self-portrait Founder Han Chong
This year’s Fashion InStyle welcomed Han Chong, founder and creative director of self-portrait, as an ambassador for NEXT@Fashion InStyle, bringing a global perspective to the event. FASHIONALLY seized the opportunity to interview Han, where he shared his experiences visiting Hong Kong, insights from collaborating with five emerging designers — all of whom are alumni of the YDC, and the passion driving his commitment to nurturing young talent. Additionally, Han offered words of encouragement to YDC 2025 participants, urging them to boldly pursue their dreams.
Q1: Welcome to Hong Kong! It’s great to see you again since YDC 2023. Is there anything special about this visit? What’s the purpose of your trip to Hong Kong this time?
Han: It’s always great to be back in Hong Kong! This visit feels particularly special because I’m here as part of the NEXT@Fashion InStyle showcase. Over the last months, I’ve been mentoring five emerging designers. On this trip I’ll be meeting them in person and seeing their final collections for the first time.
Q2: What do you think are the challenges to the designers in this collaboration? Is the use of new materials in design or creation becoming a trend and a future direction for designers?
Han: Translating an idea into something real - especially when you’re working with unfamiliar materials or new techniques - is never easy. It takes trial and error, and that process can feel overwhelming. But that’s also where real growth happens. What impressed me about the designers in this programme is that they weren’t just making clothes, they were building concepts around the fabric itself. With the right support and structure, that kind of experimentation can pave the way for the next generation of designers.
Q3: Beyond fashion design, your brand self-portrait consistently generates buzz in branding and marketing. Can you share how you achieve this?
Han: For designers building their own brands, what advice would you offer on brand promotion? self-portrait has always been clear about who we are and who we’re designing for. That kind of consistency is key - not just in the product, but in how we speak to our audience, across campaigns, retail, and online. Everything has to feel connected and intentional. Social media is one of the most powerful tools you have. Make sure your content is engaging and thoughtful, and that it reflects your brand clearly. And while working with celebrities and influencers can help build momentum, don’t underestimate your customers. They’re often your biggest advocates, and the most influential voice your brand can have.
Q4: You’ve been a strong supporter of young designers, like offering scholarships to CSM students, judging at fashion competitions like YDC. What do young designers need most in order to survive in this highly competitive industry?
Han: I’ve always believed in supporting young designers because I know how tough this industry can be when you’re just starting out. What young designers need most isn’t just exposure, it’s also structure, guidance, and access. You need people who will challenge you, help you refine your ideas, and show you how to turn creativity into a sustainable business. Knowing how to build a collection is one thing, but knowing how to price it, produce it, and bring it to market is what sets a designer up for long-term success.
Q5: The theme for YDC 2025 is “How ‘Bout You?”, encouraging participants to express themselves and dreams through fashion while boldly pursuing their goals. What would you say to designers who have already signed up to inspire them?
Han: If you’ve signed up, focus, work hard, and make the opportunity count.
