YDC 2019 Champion Wilson Yip will launch his debut accessories collection inspired by his forgetfulness

Art lover Wilson Yip had aspirations to become an art director in the film industry but thought career prospects for that would be slim, so he opted for fashion design and graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a BA in Fashion and Textiles in 2015. “Fashion design is quite a broad creative discipline that can be tackled from different angles. I also love shopping for clothes so it’s a good decision for me,” said Yip.

In 2019, the designer joined the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest (YDC) and was crowned Champion for his collection “Forgetful Still”. He also won the Best Footwear Design Award, for which he was given a chance to collaborate with fashion retailer i.t apparels Ltd's in-house brand ete! to launch an accessories collection based on his winning design.

Yip said taking part in the YDC was a rewarding experience that widened his horizons. “I particularly enjoyed meeting the judges who gave me expert advice on my work. I also got to meet with a lot of industry people like buyers and publicists from whom I also received a lot of feedback.”

“Forgetful Still” is a collection inspired by Yip’s absentmindedness. The structure of the clothing is redesigned down to the smallest details. The collars and hoods of the jackets are detachable, while buttonholes can be used to attach different accessories or keys. The baggy trousers have details such as multiple pockets, exposed or frayed seams and lining, and magnetic buttons that automatically snap into place to avoid the embarrassment of the open fly. The creative process revolved around problem solving. “There was a lot of trial and error because some prototypes didn’t work. It was only four outfits but there were more than 20 items so it was a lot of work, especially since I was working full-time as a designer while preparing this collection,” said Yip.

For the ete! collaboration, the designer decided to develop an accessories collection as he could reach more customers. The accessories collection is an extension of Yip’s YDC winning collection, which consists of socks in three colourways and a leather bag in two colours. The socks feature signature patterns of “Forgetful Still”, while the leather bag incorporates a modern design, added a touch with a metallic logo charm and a functional magnetic buckle. Meanwhile, Yip specially designed a commemorative-edition scarf made from high quality Italian mohair and alpaca fleece. “This is the first time that I’ve launched products in my own name so I’m very excited. My aim was to produce something of high quality and durability.”

As the YDC Champion, Yip has won an internship at the studio of renowned Japanese brand Mihara Yasuhiro starting in October this year. “I’m curious where the future will lead me. There is so much to learn about fashion – technology, history, business and media – and my passion lies in these great unknowns. I’m not putting any limit on myself including where I will be working. Hong Kong is a small place but I will always be promoting Hong Kong with me wherever I go.”
