HOMEFEATURES ▸ 5 Shops To Go on #hkfashionmap
2016.12.01

Despite how online shopping and fast fashion make it easy to keep up with the latest trends, it is also easier to bump into your fashion “twin” if you only buy from major outlets. It’s time to go for  local design and special fashion boutiques and create your unique style, like the following five stylish boutiques on #hkfashionmap with FASHIONALLY.

AMENPAPA
Established in 2007, AMENPAPA’s collections feature stories and quotes from the Bible. The brand not only sells apparel, but builds a connection between the 2,000-year-old classic and the modern world. Co-founder Leo Chan believes local design has a profound impact. “Look at creative capitals such as New York, London and Paris, you will realise that art and creativity reflect a city’s history and culture. As a member of the city, we must promote local design, as it also spurs the  economy and tourism.” Apart from the three shops in Hong Kong, the brand also has stockists in North America and several cities in Asia, such as Galeries Lafayette Beijing, Parkson Malaysia, TANGS in Singapore, Lotte Department Store in Seoul, as well as Isetan Tokyo. Recognising the potential of e-commerce, the founders spent six months researching before appointing an e-commerce specialist in San Francisco to fully revamp its e-shop.

Numb
Founders Miu Chan and Donald Chung are not your typical designer-entrepreneur. The pair started Numb only as a business without receiving formal design training. But as they spent more time disassembling garment pieces, their interest in fashion grew and eventually launched their signature label Numb based on self-learning. The shop also features local brands Rini Wei, Kody Chan, functional apparel label Nilmance, as well as overseas headwear brands. What’s even more unique about this shop is that many of the outfits are second-hand pieces that come their own stories. “We don’t separate brand-new items from the vintage, especially when all vintage items here have their own stories. Customers choose apparels here because they think the pieces match their style, whether the items are new or used,” Chan explained.

The Refinery
Located in PMQ, multi-brand shop The Refinery was founded by Elizabeth Lau after moving back to Hong Kong with her husband several years ago. The shop stocks English and French labels, some of which cannot be found elsewhere in the city, including headwear brand dinu bodiciu, as well as accessories label BIJOUX DE FAMILLE. The shop is filled with trendy and unique items, including from local brands Shannam, MADEGREY, and Lau’s own label.

Fungus Workshop
Celebrating its seventh anniversary, Fungus Workshop is founded by Philip Lau and Hong Kong YDC alumnus Baldwin Pui in Sheung Wan’s tranquil Po Hing Fong. The shop takes orders and offers a workshop space for lovers of unique hand-made designs. The smell of genuine leather guides visitors in the shop filled with leather goods, while the retro workshop ignites the do-it-yourselfers’ dedication to make their one-of-a-kind leatherwork. “Our clients have high standards when it comes to leather goods,” the pair explains. “Many of them come to us for custom-made items, some spend a considerable amount of time learning how to bring their own designs to life.”
